The vast majority of people have felt “tight” through their upper traps at some point in time and for many, this gradually turns into a painful or “cooked” neck.
Often, people come to Physio wanting manual therapy, massage, dry needling or someone to loosen the area up.
And honestly? Manual therapy can be a really useful tool for temporarily calming things down and reducing pain.
But here’s the issue…
Many people then find themselves constantly stretching, self-massaging or rolling their upper traps just to keep the tightness under control, without it ever truly going away.
So maybe it’s not just “tightness”.
It’s well understood that when a muscle isn’t strong enough to handle the demands placed on it, it can start to feel tight, overloaded and painful. In many cases, that feeling of “tightness” is actually just the body’s way of signalling irritation and fatigue.
This is why one of the most effective long-term solutions is often strength.
By improving the strength and capacity of the muscles, they become better equipped to tolerate daily life, work, gym, parenting, sport and posture-related demands without constantly flaring up.
So how does this relate to a cooked neck?
Your trapezius muscles (“traps”) attach from the shoulder blade up into the neck and play a huge role in both shoulder blade movement and neck stability.
When the traps are weak or lacking endurance, other smaller muscles around the neck can become overloaded trying to compensate. This can also place extra stress on the joints of the neck itself.
By strengthening the traps and surrounding muscles, we can often improve the neck’s overall support system, reduce overload and help decrease that constant feeling of tightness and tension.
Does this mean stretching is bad?
Not at all.
Stretching, massage, dry needling and manual therapy can all absolutely help — particularly when symptoms are irritated.
But if you’re only ever trying to “release” the area without improving the muscle’s strength and capacity, the problem often keeps returning.
That’s why at Next-Gen Physio we typically combine hands-on treatment with tailored strengthening and movement-based rehab to help create longer-lasting relief.
