Office Worker Survival Guide

5 Simple Ways to Keep Your Body Happy at Work

If you spend most of your day sitting at a desk, you’re not alone.

Office work (and working from home) has become the norm for many people, but unfortunately our bodies weren’t designed to stay in one position for hours at a time.

The good news? You don’t always need an expensive ergonomic setup or standing desk to reduce aches, pains and stiffness. While those things can certainly help, a few simple daily habits can make a huge difference.

1. Get Up Every 20–60 Minutes 🚶

One of the biggest contributors to discomfort isn’t sitting itself, it’s staying still for too long.

Set a reminder to stand up every 20–60 minutes. Walk to the kitchen, refill your water bottle, visit a colleague or simply stretch your legs for a minute or two.

Regular movement helps:

  • Improve circulation
  • Reduce stiffness
  • Give your muscles and joints a chance to reset

2. Walk During Phone Calls 📞

If you don’t need to be glued to your screen, use phone calls as an opportunity to move.

Whether it’s pacing around the office, walking outside or simply standing while you talk, these small bursts of activity add up throughout the day.

You might be surprised how many extra steps you can accumulate just by turning phone calls into walking meetings.

3. Change Positions Frequently 💺

There is no such thing as the perfect posture to maintain all day.

The best posture is your next posture.

Rather than trying to sit perfectly upright for eight hours, focus on changing positions regularly.

Lean back. Sit forward. Cross your legs. Uncross them. Stand for a while, then sit again.

Movement and variety are far more important than holding one “ideal” position.

4. Strength Train Regularly 💪

Your body is more resilient when it’s strong.

Regular strength training helps:

  • Build muscle capacity
  • Improve posture endurance
  • Better prepare your body for work and everyday life

You don’t need to become a gym enthusiast, just 2–3 sessions per week can provide significant benefits for your overall health and help reduce your risk of persistent aches and pains.

5. Stop Chasing the Perfect Chair 🪑

Many people believe their discomfort will disappear if they just find the right chair.

While a comfortable workstation is important, even the most expensive ergonomic chair can’t overcome sitting still all day.

Instead of putting all your energy into finding the perfect chair, focus on building better movement habits.

A good chair can help… but regular movement is what truly keeps your body feeling its best.

The Bottom Line

When it comes to office work, movement is medicine.

✔ Get up regularly
✔ Take calls on the move
✔ Change positions often
✔ Stay strong
✔ Remember that no chair can replace regular movement

Your body doesn’t need perfection, it just needs variety.

Small changes throughout your day can have a surprisingly big impact on how you feel at work and beyond.
